Lake Forest Graduate School of Management recently honored faculty member John P. Pappas with the School’s prestigious Distinguished Faculty Award. The award is granted annually, based on the nomination of the School’s graduating class, to recognize one LFGSM faculty member for outstanding teaching skill and excellence in business leadership. Unprecedented in the School’s history, this is the second time Pappas has been nominated for the honor by his students; he previously received the award from the LFGSM Class of 2000.
Class of 2008 graduate John Ott presented Pappas with the award during the School’s Commencement Ceremonies on June 29, 2008. Introducing Pappas, Ott praised Pappas for his passion for business, penchant for sparking lively classroom discussion, and skill in bringing his years of business experience to life in the classroom. “He challenged his students’ assumptions, revealed hidden causes, and expounded on relevant tangents; in the process, he reshaped our view of the business environment,” Ott said.
Accepting the award, Pappas described the elements that form the powerful classroom dynamics that exist at LFGSM: the freedom to vigorously challenge others’ contentions (even the instructor’s); a stimulating environment where bright, experienced business professionals thrive; and one where meaningful learning takes place. In his typical style, Pappas posed a question: “Does your current work environment have elements that are evocative of our LFGSM classroom dynamics?” If the answer is no, he challenged, “What do you think? As managers, might this be an initiative worthy of your pursuit?”
Over the years, Pappas has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to giving back to LFGSM and the business community it serves. A 1992 LFGSM graduate and Hotchkiss Scholar, he has served as an LFGSM faculty member for 16 years. Pappas was elected to the LFGSM Board of Directors in 2004, and is an active member of the School’s Marketing Curriculum Council. An experienced marketing expert, he has advised students, organizations and industry groups on marketing issues as well as key business topics ranging from critical thinking to networking to strategic planning.
Currently, Pappas is Senior Vice President for Coleman Cable, Inc. Throughout his 24-year career at Coleman Cable, he has contributed to the company’s growth and success, serving in a myriad of senior marketing management and general management roles.
Pappas holds a BA in Public Administration from Drake University and an MBA from Lake Forest Graduate School of Management.
