At Lake Forest Graduate School of Management we offer a number of opportunities each year for students of our MBA Program to take part in our Global Focus Program. The Global Focus allows students to travel with faculty to a country that has been identified as an emerging business market, and engage with business leaders who help define the local customs, highlights and challenges of conducting business within the region. Past destinations have included places like China, Thailand and Poland with future destinations including Serbia, Turkey, Malaysia and – our highly anticipated – trip to Bogota, Colombia in February 2015. Our blog titled, “Destination Colombia” explains why we selected this location and the importance of its emerging market.

Learning Outcomes for Global Focus

Juan Rocha, a key faculty member at LFGSM will be leading the trip to Colombia and, with 27 years of international business experience, understands the importance of global business knowledge as the world keeps getting “smaller” in terms of trade and culture. Juan is particularly excited for what Colombia has to offer as an emerging marketplace.

“Colombia has developed strong business ties with American companies; it is a great place to invest these days,” says Rocha. “The country offers great clothing sourcing capabilities, coffees, fruits, flowers and, most recently, oil. I am looking forward to seeing the changes Colombia has experienced and believe the students will benefit greatly from it.”

Juan believes Colombia will prosper to be a leading country in Latin America within a few years.

Past Experiences

Remo Picchietti, another LFGSM faculty member, led a group of students to Asia as part of the Global Focus program. He believes these trips are not theoretical academic exercises, they are an opportunity for practical, helpful consulting engagements with support from faculty and fellow students.

Picchietti says, “Any potential or current employee has a great advantage when he/she has the international business background offered by the Global Focus Program. An employee with that experience will be able to contribute to the success of our business in respect for, and appreciation of, the ways business differs in all parts of the world.”

Being able to participate in a global management consulting project outside the four walls of a students’ current business through the Global Focus program is an invaluable opportunity.
