Al Spector is the kind of socialpreneur who inspires other business leaders.  After 22 years of his corporate career, he decided to pursue his passion for sailing by opening the Marin Sailing School in San Francisco Bay.  His school is based in Sausalito, California.

Al Spector commenced his career as an in-house attorney with Grainger (GWW), a leading broad line supplier of maintenance, repair and operating (MRO) products with distribution is Asia, Europe and Latin America.  He later joined Thompson Multi-Media in the role of a Director of International Logistics, and then served in a business development role with Savi Technology.

Presently Al is a Consultant for RGP (Resources Global Professionals) in the San Francisco Bay area.   His expertise in supply chain and legal and regulatory matters allows him to consult a variety of clients on a broad range of products. He has served on an acquisition team for a global pharmaceutical firm, done strategic consulting for a global telecom client, a US healthcare network, and several technology companies.

Incorporating his passion for sailing into a small business was an idea that came to fruition for Al. Marin Sailing School provides small group or one-on-one instruction in sailing with what Al describes as his own personal twist, which has an adventurous outward-bound theme.  His students learn how to sail, acquire marine safety and racing skills- and enjoy the special excitement of sailing.

Shortly after commencing his business, Al was approached by a colleague who inquired about the availability of sailing lessons for the visually impaired and blind.  A niche market and a rewarding new direction soon followed.

Providing the opportunity for individuals who are blind to learn how to sail, and to experience the exhilaration of sailing has become the driving force behind the school, which now offers specialized programs for the blind with a steady intake of students each season.

While Al Spector acknowledged that his MBA from Lake Forest was a substantial investment in time and energy, he considers the tools and training he received to be a credit to his current business success.

“The tools that I left Lake Forest with they clearly [provided] a fantastic return on the time I invested in it”. – Al Spector

Al Spector is an inspiring business leader with a socialpreneurial vision to enrich the lives of others. His ability to incorporate his love of sailing into a successful business is an excellent example of the leadership and business skills offered through the curriculum at Lake Forest Graduate School of Management.
