With any economic downturn companies will look internally to see where they can cut expenses.  There are many reasons a company may choose to downsize, and a reduction in salaried cost is not the exclusive reason for an organizational change.  Companies may downsize as a way to signal that they are being proactive and adjusting to changes in business model or as a way to eliminate any duplicated resources or redundancy after a corporate merger.   Eliminating salaries may sound like a fast and easy method on paper however it can  produce some unanticipated consequences and organizational fall out.

Marketing with Small Business Saturday and the "Shop Small" Movement

Small Business Word CloudThanks to the 2014 Academy Awards Ceremony where host Ellen DeGeneres had pizza delivered from a local pizza delivery chain, shopping small took center stage at the national and international level.

The movement was started by American Express in 2010 as a response to the huge ‘big box’ chain sales that occur on what is commonly referred to as “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday”.  Small Business Saturday encourages small business retailers and consumers to shop at local businesses.  This marketing concept has swept the globe as both business to business customers and consumers alike enjoy the benefit of supporting small enterprise businesses in their own neighborhood.

It feels good to support local business not just around a holiday but throughout the year, and the active Facebook page for Small Business Saturday features more than 3.3 million subscribers.
