  Ms. Berns was Managing Director, Business Systems of HSBC Holding PLC until her retirement in July 2011. Her responsibilities included technology, architecture, development, and support for HSBC North America, managing the development efforts of over 2,000 technology professionals across Canada, the U.S., Bermuda and India. HSBC - North America ranks among the top 10 financial services companies in the United States. Globally, HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organizations in the world. HSBC's international network comprises over 10,000 offices in over 80 countries.
 
Ms. Berns has over 30 years experience in system application development in the Financial Services industry, specific to banking, credit cards, deposit products, and lending products. She joined HSBC (Household International) in 1984. Prior to HSBC, she worked at Continental Illinois National Bank.

Ms. Berns was elected to the Board of Directors of Lake Forest Graduate School of Management in 2006. She chaired the Technology committee and is currently a member of the Research, Development and Innovation Committee and the Executive Committee. Ms. Berns also served on the Board of Directors of The Emergency Fund, a Chicago-based organization serving over 9,000 individuals in need through partner agencies in the Chicago area. She is a member of Women in Technology of Illinois and Boardroom Bound.
