We take pride in our "Learn it Today, Use it Tomorrow" philosophy, and so do our students. In fact, many alumni put their education to work immediately on the job. This truly is the case with Class of 2001 alumnus Ed Carney.

Carney, President & CEO of Superior Graphite Co.,volunteers with LFGSM’s fundraising planning, is an active participant in Hotchkiss Scholar alumni events, and a generous donor. Superior Graphite Co. was founded by Carney’s great-grandfather to serve our country's graphite needs during WWI. Since then, the company has adapted to the changing marketplace, serving a broad range of industries around the world, and earning numerous industry awards.

As the only one of his generation continuing with the family business, Carney's sense of responsibility and LFGSM’s "education that works" drew him to the School. "I felt a true urgency about becoming an effective business leader. I wasn't looking for an MBA degree to increase my marketability," he recalls. "What I really needed were real tools, right away." Indeed, Carney knows the value of our "Learn it Today, Use it Tomorrow" philosophy; he became CEO in 2000, while still studying at LFGSM.

"As a leader of a medium-sized business, I recognize this is a time of great challenge, but also opportunity. I want to do everything I can to help LFGSM meet its challenges, and seize its opportunities."
